Apple adds GPS to iPhone 3G
It’s no secret that here at Crave Towers, we can barely find our way to the sandwich shops — and they’re just across the street (across the street and around a bend, to be fair. After all, this is London). Oddly, we can always remember the way to the pub. Despite these selective navigational skills, we’re quite excited that Apple has included GPS in the iPhone 3G. It’s not as good as having the Knowledge, but we’ll be able to explore new parts of the city — imagine the pubs we’ll find! -Shannon Doubleday.
It’s cheaper, faster and a lot friendlier for business. Apple’s blockbuster smartphone already had nifty features such as visual voicemail, a splendid built-in video iPod and the best mobile Web browser I’ve ever used. With GPS newly added to the mix, this handheld marvel has no equal among consumer-oriented smartphones.
And for kicks: Apple has banned two high-school students and their friends from its international retail chain, permanently.
Daniel Fukuba, 17, Eric Vicenti, 16, and two of their friends were detained by police outside the company’s store in downtown Palo Alto for 2.5 hours last week. Their crime? Hacking an iPhone on the premise so they could install a third-party car racing game, then leaving the store.
After being detained by the cops and lectured by the manager on the dangers of “hacking” into the phones, the teens were photographed and told their pictures were being sent to all Apple stores so employees could be “on the lookout” for them in the future.
And if it comes to pass, expect to see a whole bunch of location-based services arrive along with the formal release of the SDK, expected in late June. Om Malik notes that Google Maps is an extremely popular iPhone application already, and the addition of GPS would make that service even more compelling.
